First off: happy New Year's Day everyone! It's very heart-warming, to me at the very least, to see that VG is still standing, and stronger than ever, today. Despite all the qualms, battles, and competition in the field, Vile Gaming is still at the top of it's game. 2009 was the year that VG solidified it's hold on the fastest community. We proved that we are the best community, with the best league, to ever exist in the larger "fastest map" population.
In 4 days, on the 5th of January, VG will celebrate it's 5 year anniversary since it's initial realization back in 2005. That's 5 years of blood, sweat, and tears that I've poured in. Since that day I've put in over $5,500 of my own (plus $2,000 more in paid cash prizes), clocked in countless sleepless nights, and jeopardized other aspects of my personal life. However, that is only part of the battle.
The heart of VG
Another part goes to the great admins that VG has been blessed with on it's staff over the years. We've seen many admins come and go; some good (viViD[nK], DarkSeph[FF]), some bad (Shocker, Xel'Naga). However, we've learn from our mistakes and refined our staff. I am confident that the staff we have now, which is full of dedicated and like-minded individuals, will do their part to advance VG as much as they can.
The last, but most important, part of the battle is credited to all of you, the members of the immediate VG community. You all deserve credit for believing in me and in my staff, but most importantly remaining active in the community. Your activity is single-handedly the most important contributing factor to VG's growth. I can offer only the sincerest thanks for continuing to use the services provided here. And to further show my gratitude I will continue to do my part in expanding VG and it's network of other sites. I will do my best to keep you all proud to be a part of this great community.
Do we step into the spotlight or fade into the back?
Now, that leads me to the bulk of this post.. the future of VG; more importantly: what is in store for VG in the year 2010, what projects are still being worked, what new projects are being planned, and how are we going to tackle them. It is no mystery that StarCraft II will for sure (despite it being pushed back a few months, twice) be out sometime this year. That presents us with the opportunity to break into the larger pack, to make a real name for ourselves.
As aforementioned, we've already dominated the community of fastest map players, but now it's time to reach out and grab a piece of the pie that the larger community of general SC players share. SC2 will present us with a last chance opportunity to become one of the top leading SC community sites, amongst the ranks of TeamLiquid.net and GosuGamers.net. And don't worry, the fastest map community will not be neglected nor forgotten. This is where VG started and this is what we will do our best to keep alive in SC2. We'll be at the forefront of the fastest maps in SC2 and at the same time have our foot in the door of the rest of the community.
Projects, projects, projects..
2008 saw the release of VG's Cache. 2009 saw the beta release of Strife. So what does that bode for 2010? Other than Cache and Strife, the projects below are being worked on and one of them will see an initial release in the coming months. It wouldn't be any fun if I told you which one so I'll just list the last 3 sister sites in the VG network and let you guess..
I m p e r i u m ( http://vilegaming.com/imperium.x )
Imperium is geared towards being a browser-based game that plays like a MMORTS. Imagine thousands of players commanding vast armies while at same time fighting for territory on one massive map. To get a glimpse of how it is envisioned, try out other games like Travian or Tribal Wars.
M a p l a n t i s ( http://vilegaming.com/maplantis.x )
The rebirth of a lost city; a city of mapping and modding. The focus will be around StarCraft II's editor: Galaxy. This will be home to a plethora of user-made maps and mods for SC2, plus host to a few featured projects that I've brainstormed.
A x i s ( http://vgaxis.com )
Axis is going to play home to thousands of clans all over the globe. It will provide services to individual clans such as forums, rosters, intra-clan wars, inner-clan ladders, and much more. Clans are no doubt an integral part of SC and Axis will do it's beast to ease the pain and take out the hassles of running a clan.
This does not mean that both Cache and Strife are worked on concurrently also. As any veteran member of the community knows I work sporadically and on several projects at one time. At the moment I'm working on a major overhaul for Cache (both design-wise and feature-wise) and finishing up Strife for it's final beta push (stage 2). VG has a bright future as long as we maintain the course, and as long as you all motivate me to work at 100% capacity.
Be there!
So with all that said I sincerely hope you all remain with us for the following year. There is no doubt that VG can only continue to prosper this year; forward is the only direction this train goes and it doesn't stop for anything or anyone. I hope that each and every one of you continues to love SC just as much as the next guy. Stick with us and you'll have only the greatest memories and experience with this community. Stick with us because I guarantee you that you won't regret it. VG will raise the bar over and over again.
Love,
Spartan
