Another successful season ends

Comments (8)Posted by Spartan[nK] on Dec 24, '08 in News / VGT

We have triumph yet again as a league, folks. The numbers don't lie and only strengthen our foundation we all have been a part of over the years. VGT as a league is truly remarkable, not on it's own but because of all the players that participate in it.

This season was 2 weeks shorter than the usual 2 months and even with that handicap we still achieved a remarkable number of matches played. We hit just about under 17,000 total matches. Averaging 3,000 matches per week, if we had kept the regular season length those 2 extra weeks would've brought us up to 22,000 matches just like the previous seasons. Even with the horrible dent that the latest StarCraft patch caused to our league for a few days, which ceased all league play for a good 2-3 days, we achieved our numbers. An astounding 1,500 unique players have participated one way or another in this season. The stats are testimony to our legacy that continues.

Before I go on I would just like to say thank you, again, to everyone that continues to make this league what it is:
- The LAs for making sure all matches are reviewed and all complaints are solved.
- The SAs for doing their best to keep out hackers and punish abusers.
- The players for choosing to play in this league.

Without further delay, here are your ladders' final standings..

Match rating system

1 star.. 2 stars.. 3 stars.. ..5? Do you like rating things? I do and I know you do, too. Well, now we can all have some fun rating things.. thousands of 'em. I have added a new feature where players can rate a match after watching the replay.

To use the new system, go to a match's page and select a rating from the values 1 to 5. The higher the rating the better the match, obviously. Furthermore, in each player's profile you can see their average match rating. A player's average rating helps gauge how skilled and exciting that player is.

Enjoy yet again another new league feature! Like always there is plenty more interesting things to come as I continue to provide for the community.

League Update and Reminders

With four weeks in, and just over two weeks to go, more than 10,000 league matches have already been played. As always, the dedication each player brings to the league is key to it's success. The VG Staff truly appreciates your outstanding commitment level. This is the last of VGT for 2008, so let's end this year with a bang! Not to worry though because we'll be back in 2009 with a newly revised schedule. Starting January 1st, join us for another season of competitive Starcraft gameplay.

In other news around the community, be sure to check out Vile gaming's new Website Server making the site faster than ever as well as a new channel for Brood War users. In addition to those changes, be sure to take advantage of our newest feature-- the Player Reputation system. If you have been away, please take the time to review our Alternative Reporting System which is a result of Starcraft patch 1.16.0.

Also, stop by and chat with members and staff from the community using our Vilegaming Ventrillo Server. You can grab the information Here.

In closing, stay tuned for more new features coming to the community which should include putting the finishing touches on the revamped player profiles as well as some other must-see features.

Player reputation system

Comments (25)Posted by Spartan[nK] on Dec 02, '08 in News / VGT

Ever been victim to a player that lags the game on purpose? Or what about a player that drops and leaves you on the dreaded drop screen for a full 45 seconds of nothing? Then there are the players that cannon whore the map and play hour long matches. Don't you wish you could warn others about these assholes? On the other hand there are also players that make you wet because of their sheer awesomeness and display of skill. Shouldn't those players get some special recognition?

If you've answered yes to any of the above questions then boy have I got a new feature for you, the reputation system. Got stuck in another hour long match? Give that player a negative reputation point. Just witnessed the best micro in years? Give that player a positive reputation point. The power of reputation, especially in leagues, proves to be a handy tool. And now that tool is back in the hands of the players themselves.

To use the reputation system, go to the League hub and click on the link Player reputation on the navigation menu. This page will bring up a list of all players that you have played with (partner or opponent) throughout the season. From there you can "+rep" or "-rep" players accordingly. Keep in mind that you can only give each player one or the other, but you can change your feedback at any time.

Enjoy the new league feature! There is plenty more to come as I continue to bring the best of ideas to life here on VG. Remember, I serve the community as long as they serve VG itself with activity.

Alternative match reporting

Comments (13)Posted by Spartan[nK] on Nov 29, '08 in News / VGT

As you all know, the recent StarCraft patch has impacted VG's leagues in a very negative manner. More specifically, the new patch changed the data in an individual replay. Why this is important is that the auto-update feature of reporting matches on VGT relies on an outside program called RepASM to parse each replay in order to verify it as a valid league match. RepASM has not been updated yet to handle the new replay format so until then the automatic match reviewing process has been nullified.

However, do not fret because I have just finished coding in another feature to the league system. That feature can already be seen presently on the reporting pages and is none other than the option of having your match reviewed manually by an admin. The benefits of this, aside from having it as an alternative when the automatic method is down, is that League Admins have better control over the matches.

To select between the two types of reviews, system and admin, just simply select the appropriate option on the reporting page. Everything else should be normal and require the basics only, just as everyone is accustomed to already.

With all that said and done, until RepASM gets it's own patch, all players are recommended to report their league matches normally for now. Remember, that admin reviewed matches will not be automatic and your ladder record will not always be instantaneously updated or accurate.
